Scenes from Buddhist legends also appeared on the walls of the chapels around the main stupa. In one unique scene, probably from the 3rd or 4th century CE, waves and water plants were sculpted along with numbers of fish and marine figures on the floor. The garments of half-submerged Bodhisattvas (Buddhas-to-be) clung wetly to their bodies to enhance the realism of the watery scene. A grinning creature with bushy hair, buck teeth and a fish tail floating above snakes on the floor, suggest that this represents the Buddha's encounter with the King of the Nagas, (snakes).
