General Roberts in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan war (1878-1880) favored the Lataband Pass (elevation 2,499 meters) north of the Khord Kabul route which was the route subsequently preferred by foreigners visiting and working for Amir Abdur Rahman. Amir Habibullah, the first to bring motor cars to Afghanistan, made the Khord Kabul route motorable, preferring it to the Lataband road which almost disappeared every year during the spring floods.
