The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan came into being in 2004 following the departure of the Taliban, but renovations begun in 2003, and the museum opened for the public in September 2004. Today the erstwhile dilapidated soot-encrusted building once an empty shell stands transformed, its whitewashed high-vaulted corridors gleaming over sweeping flights of marble staircase.
