View from the west over house tops to Bala Hissar, The spur turns emerald green for a few days in spring. A great wall (visible in the center) ran from Bala Hissar up and over the crest of the mountain down to a gap cut by the Kabul River, Between the Sher Darwaza and Kohi-Asmai mountains that divide the northern and southern sections of the city. The walls, seven meters high and nearly 4 meters thick, also had strategically positioned sentry towers. Probably they were first built in the 5th century by a local Hepthalite chieftain, and rebuilt and rebuilt down through many centuries.
