Bactrian Coin. Demetrios I: Reverse. Kunduz Hoard, Kunduz Province.
Hercules stands holding his gnarled club and a lion's skin in his left hand and places a wreath on his head with his right hand. According to legend, Hercules was required to perform twelve difficult tasks to atone for having killed his wife and children in a fit of rage brought on by Hera, the Queen of the Gods. The first task required him to slay the Nemean lion that was menacing the countryside by kidnapping young girls so as to lure avenging warriors into his cave for a healthy meal. Hercules dispatched the lion in the cave with his trusty club.
