Stucco Heads. Hadda, Nangarhar Province.
July 1997
After the April 1978 leftist coup in Kabul, the bazaars of Peshawar Pakistan, filled with looted items from the National Museum, some authentic, many fakes crafted in Pakistan. Although UNESCO frowned upon the purchase of stolen objects, SPACH (Society for the Protection of Afghanistan's Cultural Heritage), purchased for return a few that were recognizably from the museum. These three had the museum numbers inked on the back. Left to right: #62.3.560, H. 8.5 cm, #62.3.557, H. 5.5 cm; #62.3.367, h. 9 cm.
