Sculpture From Paitava. Paitava, Parwan Province.
This delightful schist figure of a child is connected with yet another story. One day the Buddha was out searching for food when he came across two young boys playing in the street. One offered him a bowl of dust. The Buddha then predicted the boy would become the great emperor Ashoka (3rd century BCE) who introduced Buddhism to Afghanistan. Note the boy's hair style. It was customary to shave the heads of young boys, leaving only long locks hanging down the back.
