Aerial View of the Interior of Bala Hissar (High Palace-Fortress).

5 July 1975
The Bala Hissar is a natural fortress situated on a mountain spur some 150 feet above the plain. It commands the city nestled securely at its foot and is divided into Upper and Lower sections. The arsenal, including a notorious dungeon, stood on a mound of its own in the upper section surrounded by bastioned walls mirroring those of the outer walls, dating from the 17th century when the Moghul Emperors Jehangir and Shah Jahan devoted much attention to the city. Possibly emperor-to-be Babur occupied this mound in 1504 before moving east in 1525 to found his empire.
