High-Relief Open-Work Belt Clasp. Gold From Tillya Tepe. Near Sheberghan, Jawzjan Province.
1981
This mirror-half of a complex high-relief open-work clasp (96.6 x 6.3 cm; w.141 grams) closing the cloak of an 18-25 year old girl in burial 3 shows a warrior standing between two tree-like columns with dragons at their foot. A strap under the chin secures his helmet and he wears armor draped with a mantle above a kilt reaching from the waist to his prominent knees. Open sandals, designed with a strap between the toes and laced up to mid-calf were held in place by buckles. From Roman coins found here it would seem the lady was buried in the 1st century A.D.
