Amir Abdur Rahman Period: Bagh-i-Bala (High Garden) 1893.
1977
A fountain originally graced the entry foyer that led into large halls connected with archways from which beautiful woven and embroidered hangings replaced doors... The Amir insisted on durability so all of his palaces had massively thick walls. He also established a Department of Public Works, several kilns to produce long-lasting baked bricks to replace the sun-dried mud brick mixed with straw that deteriorated so rapidly. A workshop to process lime and gypsum for stucco and another for cutting stone to replace the usual mud floors were among the improvements that are visible in all his buildings.
