The variety of glassware from Begram is fascinating. One remarkable vase of transparent white glass, known as the Lighthouse or Pharos of Alexandria features a carving of the lighthouse with Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea, standing on the summit (h. 18 cm). Other details carved in high relief and attached to the molten glass, include a war galleon, a merchant ship with sails and a fisherman in his boat. They convey the sense of the very busy harbor at Alexandria in Egypt. The Pharos of Alexandria, ca. 137 meters high, was built ca. 280 BCE and was for long regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
