Hermaic Pillar Statue. Ai Khanoum, Takhar Province.
According to an inscription, this gymnasium was protected by both Heracules and Hermes, the son of Zeus as well as the God of Sports and Athletes, whose 72 cm tall limestone statue dates to the 2nd century BCE, say around 200-150 BCE. Gymnasiums trained young men for the public games and otehr athletic contests that were not only popular but a very serious part of social life at Ai Khanoium.
