In 1950 road builders diverting the Mazar highway in order to avoid a steep pass at Surkh Kotal (Red Pass), 18.5 km. north of Pul-i-Khumri, unearthed some stone blocks bearing curious markings. Responsible, prompt reporting of this find led to the discovery of one of Afghanistan's most significant archaeological sites.
