SurkhKotal Inscription. SurkhKotal, Baghlan Province.

May 1998
This 25-line inscription in Greek script is in the Bactrian language spoken by the Kushans. It tells about reconstruction work at the site initiated by one of King Kanishka's successors. The nomadic Kushans used the Greek script as they had no tradition of their own for writing. The inscription was of immense importance, for it opened up insights into this fascinating era that would otherwise have been closed.
