Second Floor Hallway To Left. Islamic State of Afghanistan.
July 1993
After the burning roof collapsed, sorting artifacts from the debris, such as the priceless Ghaznavid bronzes that had melted and fused together from the intense heat, was made all the more difficult because there was no electricity, no water, and as winter brought freezing temperatures, no heat. Eventually some 3,000 broken and mangled objects were retrieved. The staff worked by the dim light of kerosene lanterns. Electricity and water were not restored until 2003.
