Site of Tepe Sardar. Ghazni, Ghazni Province.
Excavations at Tepe Sardar (1959-1962) led by Professor Maruizio Taddei of ISMEO (Istituto per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente) modern name in Naples from 1967-1977, provided intriguing insights into the state of Buddhism in Afghanistan during the 7th and 8th centuries, just before the advent of Islam. In addition to the large central stupa, numbers of smaller decorated votive stupas surrounded it. During the civil war the site was heavily plundered, finds were moved out of place and artifacts damaged.
