Ivories From Begram. Kapisa Province.
1981
A jewel box (h. 23 cm), showing a side view below; the lid above. The lid carries two engraved scenes of a courtesan and her handmaidens clad only in jeweled girdles over the hips. In the left scene the courtesan sits on a wicker stool holding a parrot perched on her left hand. A maid stands before her holding a bowl of fruit. In the right scene, the lady sits on another style of stool covered with a decorative textile holding a mirror while applying her make up. The empty parrot cage is seen in the background on the right. Here the maid kneels before her lady holding out a bowl. These scenes are surrounded by exuberant borders filled with foliated acanthus scrolls alternating with duck-like birds in various energetic poses.
