1885
Amir Abdur Rahman
Murad Khani > Bagh-i-Bala
During the disruptive years in the middle of the 19th century various Afghan contenders fought viciously for the throne of Kabul while the British searched for a leader who would allow them to exercise control over Afghanistan without annexing it. In Samarkand, having spent eleven years in exile in Central Asia, Abdur Rahman Khan, sensed the moment was right to make his bid. He crossed the border into Badakhshan gathering forces from Kishm to Charikar where, on 20 July 1880, a tribal council proclaimed him Amir. Impressed, the British added their support.
