Stucco Heads. Hadd, Nangarhar Province.

1965
A most delightful variety of stucco heads represented worldly as well heavenly worshipers. Note the realistic variations in the faces and hair styles. The National Museum once held more than 30,000 stucco heads from Buddhist sites. They were so popular with international collectors, however, that many were looted during the civil war during the 1970s. Too many are still missing, although some 30 were kindly returned in August 2016 by the Tokyo University of the Arts.
