After the Soviets withdrew in 1988-9, major political factions fighting for control of Kabul via the Chahr Deh Valley ushered in a long period of massive shelling, especially after May 1993. The trains, however, fell victim to looters collecting metal for sale to the booming scrap-metal markets in Pakistan.
