The metal spiral staircase beside porte-cochere was a familiar feature of all the buildings built by Amir Habibullah. Imported from British India, they enabled servants, particularly cleaners delivering water to tanks on the roof and removing waste from the bathrooms, to enter and leave buildings without using the main entrances.
