Shifting the National Museum. Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

September 1996
Concern for the safety of objects prompted the first of eleven moves as early as May 1979, following an unsettled period starting with the April 1978 leftist coup, followed by the Soviet occupation in December 1978. Each move was a laborious packing and unpacking affair, for every item was minutely described, measured, photographed and recorded under the watchful eyes of numerous designated observers assigned by governments to see that nothing went astray.
