Destruction of Bamiyan Buddhas. Taliban.
8 March 2001
In February 2001, however, after hours of debate at a day-long cabinet meeting, hard-line conservatives determined to destroy the Bamiyan Buddhas. On 26 February Mullah Omar followed with an edict ordering the destruction of all non-Islamic art. The Buddhas were blown to bits on 8 March 2001.
