Bactrian Coin: Euthydemos I, Obverse. Kunduz Hoard, Kunduz Province.
1981
The Bactrian King Euthydemos I ruled from about 230-200 BCE. The Kunduz Hoard was accidentally found in a jar in 1946 by soldiers building a barracks at Khist Tapa, Qala-i-Zal, 56 km. northwest of Kunduz city, not far south of the Amu Darya. Possibly a Bactrian chief or merchant hid the 637 coins during one of the frequent raids by marauding nomads from north of the Amu Darya made at this time. This is the finest collection of Greco-Bactrian coins ever recovered.
