Sculpture From Shotorak. Shotorak, Kapisa Province.
Schist bas relief of the Adoration of the Kasyapa (h. 58 cm; weighing 125 kilos). Here are three distinguished Brahmin teachers from a powerful Hindu order who the Buddha converted after he performed several miracles. The scene was intended to convey the message of the submission of Brahmanical Hinduism to Buddhism. Two Kasyapas stand on the Buddha's right, one to the left, each dressed in Indian dhotis. The patrician bearing and fashionable dress of the couple on the left are perhpas wealthy donors who commissioned this bas relief. It was one of the first pieces to be looted from the museum in December 1992.
