Building Installations and Miners.
1965
Four miles from Samangan a deserted mud building on the left-hand side of the road marks the turn-off to Dara-i-Suf (Valley of Caves), one of Afghanistan's most important coal mining centers. The way is long and the journey a hard one of many hours. This represents a major obstacle in the full exploitation of these mines.
During a survey conducted in 1959 by the American archaeologist, Louis Dupree, and Abdul Rauf Wardak of the Kabul Museum to locate pre-historic cave and mound sites, over 50 caves were recorded in this area. Dara-i-Dadil and Dara-i-Chakmakh (Valley of Flint) in the Dara-i-Suf area yielded several hundred flint cores, core tools and flake tools which early man had fashioned. This survey was the first to identify Middle Paleolithic type tools in Afghanistan.
