The Jadi Maiwand Monument commemorates the battle fought between Afghan troops under Sardar Ayub Khan who opposed the elevation of Amir Abdur Rahman to the throne of Kabul, and British troops at Maiwand some 60 kilometers west of Kandahar on the 27th of July 1880. It was considered at that time to be the worst defeat suffered by British arms in Asia.
