It was 1969 before Kabul saw its first luxury hotel, the Intercontinental, in anticipation of an influx of affluent tourists seeking adventure while at the same time demanding first class facilities. It was located outside the city proper, above Amir Abdur Rahman's Bagh-i-Bala Palace.
