Acquired name when Amir Habibullah camped here. 1929 used as gun emplacement by supporters of Saqao; top leveled destroying all but 1st and 2nd sections of ancient Buddhist stupa begun early centuries A.D., continued to 8th A.D., just prior to advent of Islam; visited by Hsuan-tsang in 644 A.D., major excavations by Italians (Maurizio Taddei) from 1967.
