The Other Side of the Mountain.

December 1974
Families have been building spontaneous, unauthorized, but quality housing on the south slope of Koh-i-Asmai for many years, visibly intensifying in the 1960s and 70s and even more so in the 200w. These are solidly built homes. There are no slums in Kabul as are so often found encircling so many South Asian cities. Saqqao (water carriers) carrying water on their backs in leather bags to deliver water storage tanks. Numbers of homes even have vegetable and flower gardens. Some of the steep paths have been up-garden to accommodate vehicles.
