Modernization of Shahr-i-Naw's Main Shopping Streets.

December 1974
Proceeding east from Chahrahi Haji Yaqub the main street passes by Shahr-i-Naw Park filled with fir trees, restaurants and the Park Cinema on the right. On the left. there were popular kabab restaurants. Later shops with huge plate-glass windows displaying elaborate wedding gowns appeared. The transformation of downtown Shahr-i-Naw was led by the visionary Abdul Aziz, a business man who opened Kabul's first European-style super market in 1965. He stocked a wide range of tinned goods, along with packaged Afghan fruits, nuts and vegetables. Most appreciated were the sanitarily wrapped meats butchered according to western standards. His friends and associates opened modern laundries and dry cleansers in the vicinity. Kabul was firmly set on the modernization path by these early business pioneers.
