After joining the main Jalalabad-Kabul highway, the road passes through a large tunnel opened in 1963, and runs along the banks of the Darunta Reservoir which was formed when the Soviets constructed a hydroelectric power station at Darunta in 1964. It is now (2016) in very poor condition because of silting and damage during the recent civil war.
