Recreation: Picnics.

1976
Nawroz happens only once a year. On other holidays new sets of clothing and much visiting between family and friends adds to the excitement of the festive occasions. Picnicking in the countryside is often enjoyed. Picnics in Afghanistan are elaborate affairs involving much paraphernalia to produce mountains of food: portable gas stoves, pressure cookers, equipment for roasting kababs, pasta dishes, fruits, salads - and all the garnishes. Often picnics took place at estates owned by relatives outside the city, and governors often set aside gardens for picnicking, especially for the use of civil servants. Bagh-i-Zenana (gardens for women) were also available in Kabul. Since the restoration of the gardens at Bagh-i-Babur, thousands visit on weekend.
