Tennis and golf had been enjoyed since the time of Amir Habibullah when royal elites frequently played on the Chaman-i-Houzouri golf links opposite the Id Gah. Horse riding became a popular sport after motor vehicles replaced the horse for much of city transportation. Skiing on the slopes just south of the city above the highway to Ghazni was a late comer of the 1970s there was no ski lift and many frankly found the stiff climb up the mountain toolaborious just for the few moments of exhilaration on the downward glide. Nevertheless, skiers thoroughly enjoyed the convivial social atmosphere at the ski lodge. By 2000 there were no Afghan skiing, but an enterprising travel organization has sparked great interest. Prospects for Afghan representatives to attend the Winter Olympics in Seoul in 2018 are encouraging.
