Belt. Gold From Tillya Tepe. Near Sheberghan, Jawzjan Province.

1981
The male figure in Burial 4 wears a unique gold-plaited belt (1.97.6 cm; weight 840 grams) with nine hollow, round plaques (d. 4 cm.) linked by eight webbed sections formed of eight rows of braided gold thread. The scene on the plaques shows a lion turning a snarling face backwards towards a woman sitting astride it wearing a short skirt ending above the knee and sandals laced to mid-calf. Her hair is knotted into a chignon at the neck encircled by a torque, her arms are bare, her torso draped and belted. In Bactrian mythology Cybele was the only one who was accompanied by lions.
