Gold From Tillya Tepe. Near Sheberghan, Jawzjan Province.
1978
A pair of elaborate pendants (12.5 x 6.5 cm.) attached to a headdress hung on either side of the face of the woman in Burial 2. They bear a popular Central Asian motif showing a king struggling with two very angry winged and horned dragons with wide-open mouths. Each is liberally encrusted with turquoise and garnets. Connected to the hem of the king's garment and the paws of the dragons a web of six delicate chains hold golden disks and roundels inset with garnet, lapis and turquoise.
