Gold From Tillya Tepe. Near Sheberghan, Jawzjan Province.
2017
One of the more charming objects in the Tillya Tepe collection is this finely worked winged figurine of a plump, gently smiling Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, Beauty and Pleasure (5.0 cm. tall x 2.6 cm wide; weight 14.0) found on the bosom of the lady in Burial 6. Her hair is tucked into a fillet, wings sprout from her shoulders, a cast mark stands out from the middle of her forehead, and bracelets, 2 on her forearms, 3 at her wrists, adorn her arms. Her torso is bare above hips draped with soft folds. Her generous proportions epitomize ideal feminine beauty in Bactria.
