Bamiyan Valley From The Head of The Large Buddha. Bamiyan Province.

1998
Looking south to the plateau where the governor's offices and hotels are located. Ancient Bamiyan lay mid-way on a major branch of the Silk Route from Kabul to Mazar-i-Sharif. The way was long, over steep rugged trails and precipitous passes. The weary luxury caravans, men and animals as well as thousands of Buddhist pilgrims travelling with them, found Bamiyan a restful haven, and its bustling bazaars and monasteries bedecked with many-hued pennants fascinating.
