Residence compounds had only a single gate set in low unadorned walls above which only the tips of roofs were visible. There was the same desire for dignified privacy as was found in the old city. It was impossible to imagine who might live here or anything about their style of living behind these walls that shielded occupants from the prying eyes of passers-by.
