Modernization of Shahr-i-Naw's Main Shopping Streets.

October 1969
A side street around the corner specialized in fresh flowers. It is still (2016) known as Flower Street where large bouquets and fancy table pieces are created. There were bakeries on this street also where, in the late 60s, a French tourist taught an Afghan baker to make croissants. Together they guaranteed to deliver hot croissants for breakfast to any home in Shahr-i-Naw. After the refugee exodus began following the 1978 revolution, the croissant makers rose to fame in neighboring Islamabad. A branch in Kabul, called the French Bakery still makes croissants. Breakfast deliveries of hot croissants, however, are just a pleasant memory.
