Signet Ring. Gold From Tillya Tepe. Near Sheberghan, Jawzjan Province.

1978
This signet ring (3 x 2.7 cm.), worn by a woman 30-40 years old from Burial 2, displays a seated figure of the Greek Goddess Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and War, wearing a Greek-style helmet. A spear and shield are set beside her and her name is inscribed backwards on the left, clearly indicating that this ring was used as a seal. Such motifs originating in Greece, Central Asia and Bactria are an endlessly fascinating medley of traditions taken from far-flung sources of inspiration.
