Sculpture From Paitava. Paitava, Parwan Province.

1970
Another monastery excavated in 1924 by J. Hackin, DAFA, lies 50 kilometers north of Kabul and 15 kilometers southwest of Shotorak. This pedestal base (h. 25 cm) portrays the Maitreya (Future) Buddha with donors bearing offerings. The Maitreya Buddha, identified by his heavy jewelry and the Khumba (pot of wisdom) in his left hand, was poplar with the sculptors of Shotorak and Paitava. The treatment is hieratic and stiffly formal, as were many of the pieces from the later phases of Gandharan art in the 4th-5th centuries CE.
