Hsuen-Tsung and His Escort.

Hsuen-Tsung started for India in 629 CE at the age of 26 and returned after 16 years with so many precious documents they were often carried on the backs of elephants. His account about Afghanistan gives us invaluable information on the geography, agriculture, people and their customs, cities and major Buddhist monasteries of his time.
