Site Of Ai Khanoum. Ai Khanoum, Takhar Province.
In the background trees line the Amu Darya at the foot of sheer rocky cliffs bordering on Turkestan. They provided natural protection from restless nomadic tribes in Central Asia. The triangular shaped, heavily fortified city measuring 2 km. in length and 600 meters in width (100 hectares; 247 acres), was divided between upper and lower sections, both enclosed by stout brik walls, very much like Kabul was divided until fairly recently.
