The Amphitheater.
1974
The issue of the Queen's newly introduced fashion of wearing diaphanous veils was a contentious issue from the very start of the European tour. The Afghan ladies arrived in Egypt wearing gossamer black veils through which their features were clearly recognizable. This so shocked the high religious Egyptian authorities that they asked the King to chastise them and make sure his women were properly veiled. The King ignored this. One their return to Kandahar, however, the ladies wore thick veils tacked to their cloche hats.
