The King's impassioned tirades on the subject of women were strong and the delegates listened in horror. Frequently objecting audibly. He expounded on how in Europe men and women worked on equal terms in all aspects of the society, political and social, in offices and factories and in setting up their own business companies. He envisioned all this for Afghanistan, but first women must be freed from purdah, abandon the veil and step boldly into the public arena. polygamy should be outlawed. And above all, compulsory education would ensure that every girl is educated. The delegates frequently objected audibly. Thus many of the seeds of revolt that eventually led to his downfall were planted.
