The Sher Shah Suri mosque in Karte Chahr was named for a Pashtun ruler who briefly ruled parts of the Mughal Empire from 1426 until he was accidentally killed in 1545. He is known particularly for his promotion of the Grand Trunk Road that ran from Calcutta to Peshawar which was vital in stimulating trade with Kabul and beyond through Central Asia.
