King Amanullah Period: Qasre Darulaman 1922-1929 unfinished.

ca. 1922
Twenty-two German engineers arrived in Kabul in 1922 bearing a complete plan for the new city, but the stolid cubic style popular in Germany at that time did not appeal to the King. He turned instead to M. Godard with the French archaeological mission (DAFA) which had just obtained the King's blessing to undertake archaeological excavations in Afghanistan. This original drawing by M. Godard in the grand style of 18th century European palaces met with the King's enthusiastic approval.
