Bazaars of Kabul.

1950
Shoppers, including women in burqas with male escorts, were also attracted by smaller bazaars dotting both sides of the Kabul River. They specialized in an infinite variety of merchandize including wholesale grains, fruit, households goods, silver and gold jewelry, textiles bird cages and birds of all sorts, including colorful pigeons, fighting Kawk (partridge), song birds, and exotic pigeons prized by those who enjoy flying pigeons for sport from their roof tops. Two bazaars in the up-river section named Chandiwal specialized: one in paper flowers popular for weddings primarily held in homes in those early times. The other was known for high-quality book-binding. Chandiwal, however, was totally demolished during the recent civil war.
