Weddings have always been a highlight in the life of every family. Traditionally, weddings were held in the home, but during the 1970s it was fashionable to celebrate weddings in hotels. The elite gravitated to the newly opened Intercontinental Hotel, the most elegant venue at that time. The less affluent held their weddings in small, modest but modern hotels that were opening up in the vicinity of Shahr-i-Naw. Western-style white wedding dresses came into fashion in the 1900s, introduced by Khayria Tarzi when she married Prince Enayatullah in 1909 at the Qawm-i-Bag. Since 2001 enormous wedding halls, their facades drenched with cascades of millions of colored, flashing lights, have spread over every part of Kabul. Often several thousand guests attend.
